'BREXITANIA'
The Theresa May Clock Board
It all started with an idea and a couple of scribbled sketches.
I thought I had been original to depict Theresa as Britannia.
But it turns out it was a zeitgeist lots of cartoonists had latched onto.
Made originally as a companion prop for use with my THERESA MAY puppet.
At first it was just a comedy sign.
Years later it was adapted to be a 'SHOW TIMES' board.
Like always, first port of call was Google for some sculpting reference pics.
A plywood baseboard was made with fixing point on the back to bolt a support stand onto.
A good strong support stand is essential as there is often oncoming wind when performing outdoors.
Jusy like making a puppet head in pulp, this low relief sculpture will be built up in many, many layers.
It's the only way I know how to make this kind of structure.
At this stage I thought it might be nice to make the whole sculpt even more 3-D by moving Theresas shield further forward. Extra work, but very effective.
Next areas to work on were The White Cliffs of Dover & Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.
Old Brexitania was used like this from 2019 to 2023.
Then for Summer 2023 I decided to adapt her into a show time board.
